About the Flim

The critically acclaimed AZUR AND ASMAR is the latest film from award-winning director Michel Ocelot (KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS). This epic animation folk tale travels to the Middle East during the Middle Ages and enchants all ages because of its historical splendor.

It is a folk tale about two children who had the same nanny: Azur, blonde and blue-eyed, son of the lord of the castle, and Asmar, dark-skinned and black-eyed, the nurse's child. Brought up like brothers, the children are suddenly torn apart. Influenced by the power of this fable the two former friends and brothers separately spend a lot of their life in search of the Fairy Djinn. They reunite as daring rivals and discover that the medieval Maghreb region, legendary home of the Fairy Djinn, is a land full of dangers and enchantments.

AZUR AND ASMAR lusciously animated and a universal tale that celebrates multiculturalism, brotherhood, friendship, and diversity. We are presenting the film as part of our Holiday Film Series because its truimphant message is about peace, brotherhood and the power of story. We are pleased to present it to educators and community leaders working in diversity and multi-culturalism as part of our commitment to curate more programming for children and youth. In the future, we hope to provide access to international and independent children’s films that are otherwise not available in our community. Part of our plan includes working with interested educators and schools to harness the power of film as a teaching tool to support core curriculum education.

This screening is an opportunity to introduce educators to the types of films we would like to program. Please follow this link to a study guide - AZUR AND ASMAR Study Guide – as an example of the resources we hope to make available to educators as part of this program.
