Ignitie Training Participants

Igniting the Fire of Leadership

The 2008 UEA Leadership academy, which was held June 9-10 at the Snowbird Ski Resort, featured an innovative partnership between the NEA and the UEA focused on developing and enhancing future leaders for the Association. A group of 16 UEA members were nominated by their local presidents to participate in the IGNITE new leader training program. This training was facilitated by NEA Western Region staffer Dr. Ruben S. Cedeno as a means to “explore the opportunities related to fulfilling the role of a UEA leader.”

The training consisted of two full-day sessions designed to give participants opportunities to examine the organizational structure of the UEA and the NEA, better understand the roles of governance and staff within the Association, explore the nature of advocacy, and foster collaboration among locals and the UEA. “The overall quality of the training was excellent” reported Sadie Thomas. “The UEA doesn't need to worry about the next generation of leaders as long as this level of leadership training is available.”

The participants examined the characteristics of effective leadership and studied effective communication methods and styles.

The UEA will offer similar opportunities for emerging leaders to develop the skills needed to advance the Association in the future. The participants represented many areas of the state and included:
